What do we do with a SWOT or Two?

Several people have been asking just what we're going to do with the SWOT Analysis that everyone is working on. SWOTs are a step in a process of evalauting our current strategic plan; they help us to identify what we do well and what we need to improve on. They also let us consider which services should be continued and which ones we don't need anymore. By identifying weaknesses and threats, we can think about strategies to counteract them. SWOTS are also a step in writing a new strategic plan. We use the SWOTs to build on our successes and identify priorities for a new plan.

We are currently evaluating our existing plan and services. That process will continue through most of the summer months. The SWOT analysis will be combined with focus group discussions, and interviews of community leaders to help us understand what we do well and what the public and staff members percieve as important. The community profiles being developed will also play into this process. Staff input in this process is essential and the work you're doing lays the ground work for future plans.

We won't be writing a new strategic plan until after the November election. Until we know whether or not the TEL Amendment passes, we really can't do any planning. Most of the public libraries in Ohio are in the same position, and are also holding off planning for the future at this point. But the SWOTs are still valuable, and when we are ready to plan; we'll have a solid basis for figuring out strategies for the future.
